Hi Balor,

I'm not sure if they still do. I got into the program by winning an award. You should probably contact them directly and ask.

Best of luck!

Hey, I was just wondering if Youth in Motion still runs those career mentorship programs that pairs you up with someone of your career of choice? If so how would I sign up for this program?

Thanks for the time making this great blog and writing these insightful entries! Really appreciate it.

Hi Aisha,

Yah I can imagine there might be a long wait, but if you ask around enough, I'm sure something might be possible. Also, you might want to consider asking your family physician as they already know you. Good luck!

Wow, observing surgery! That would be an interesting experience! I didn't know shadowing was so common, that's good to hear various things are allowed, though I'm having a tough time finding a physician who would take me in as most of the ones working at my local hospital already have a long list of med students/med hopefuls wanting to shadow...but I shall try Youth in Motion, thanks for your help Joshua!!

Hey Aisha,

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the article.

I'm not exactly sure what's allowed and what isn't to be honest. From conversations I've had, it seems like different physicians have allowed for different things. I was able to be in the room when the physician was meeting patients, but I was not able to observe surgery. Conversely, I have heard of physicians who allowed students to shadow them while in surgery, so I think it depends on the physician. The physician always told the patients and families that I was an observing student, and neither the families or patients seemed at all upset/concerned about my being there, so I think shadowing is quite common at many hospitals/clinics.

Youth in Motion seems to do many things, but much of their work revolves around coaching and mentoring young people as they figure out their career paths. I got my mentor because I won an award from Youth in Motion, but I do know they have some mentoring programs for high school students, so I would send them an email and just ask what's available if you're interested.

Hey Joshua, this is a great post! You really showed how and why job shadowing is much more important than one would initially think. But I was wondering - are you allowed to be with the doctor when he/she is addressing a patient? I thought that would raise privacy issues, which is why I never really seriously considered job shadowing a physician.

Also - what exactly is Youth in Motion? I looked at the website and it seems to be for people who are out of work/school, which wouldn't really apply to me since I am student..could you please tell me how exactly you got a mentor from Youth in Motion? Thanks so much!!
