Being a high school senior, I honestly don't know what I'll be doing ten years from now and I'm sure many of my peers are in the same situation. At this stage, it's hard to decipher which university will provide the right experience for me because of the wide range of enticing opportunities. My outlook is that if you go to university simply because you're a motivated learner that's likes school, you can't go wrong by challenging yourself to get into the most prestigious university possible. Not just for the credentials, but for personal satisfaction as well.

Great post, by the way.

@Laila: I don't think going to Guelph would change your ability to learn about medical school and admissions. You're still going to have to end up getting a lot of your information from the Internet. I definitely wouldn't pick your university based on that reason, because you will be able to find that information at Guelph just as well as you would at Western.

I'm not sure if Mac Med favours Mac students - I'm sure it can seem that way because there are so many Mac students in their med school. Honestly, there's no way to know unless you're in their admissions committee haha.

Does it matter what med school you go to? I guess it depends on what you mean. There are some circumstances where it would matter - for example, if you do medical school somewhere outside North America, it is extremely difficult to come back to Canada and practice. In that sense, it matters. If you're talking about within Canada though, I don't think prestige of the medical school matters in terms of practicing medicine. Where you do residency probably matters more.

Hey! This blog is amazing! I'm just about to pick which university I'm headed off to for next year, do you think Guelph Bio-med or Western Bio-med would be a better choice? I like that Guelph has such a community feel and is smaller than Western, but I feel like I won't be in the know-how about med schools and admissions & whatnot if I go to Guelph...? Just the whole getting information about med school from talking to senior and med school students?

Also, why does Mac Med favor Mac students? From what I know, they're the only ones.

Also aha, does the med school you go to matter? I know some are more world renown than others, but does it really matter?

@FitA: I honestly have no idea which would be easier for sure. I don't know many people who went to UTSC for biology. If you work hard you should be able to do well anywhere. I'm inclined to think York would be more manageable, but I really have no idea.

Hey, I'm not sure if you answered this already somewhere, but I'm torn between York biomed and utsc biology. Which should I take if I want to get good grades and work comparatively less? My family wants me to go to utsc for the name and because my cousins went there and ended up not getting into med school here and getting in med school in the states. If you have any friends in utsc, could you please find out how the biology program compares to yorks biomed in terms of med school chances??

Hi Jimmy,

From what I hear, if you're good at memorization, then it sounds like it would be easier to get a higher GPA in the Kin program.

Hi Josh!

In your opinion, would you say that the B.Sc. Kinesiology program is easier (in terms of getting a high GPA)than the science programs (Biology,Biomedical Sciences,Biochemistry,Chemistry) at York? Why or why not?

Thanks,

Jim

LH: I don't know anything about Mac's Life Sci program, though I'd imagine York and Mac would be pretty similar. I think the significant difference is in terms of the non-school life you want to have. If you want to go away from home for a bit and be part of a university community, pick Mac. If you'd prefer living at home, and are okay with York being a primarily commuter school, pick York.

Al: I'd pick York for sure. I didn't do UofT Life Sci first hand but my friends from class who went to UofT life sci worked way harder than me to get similar marks, and a few of them feel burned out now.

Hey Josh,
In applying to universities, my only goal was to get into UofT life sciences. Therefore, i applied to UofT, York Biomed and Ryerson Biology because i knew i wanted to stay in Toronto. I received early admissions to York and Ryerson almost instantly, and only just recently got my UofT admission a few days ago. In that time waiting for that UofT offer, I came to terms with just going to York for biomed, especially after learning how interesting the program is. Now I am really unsure of where to go and the deadline is soon. I do plan on going to med school in the future, but I don't want to live in a stressful school environment. I want to be able to maintain my grades while having a prominent social life and work a part-time job. What is your advice? UofT or York?
