I am reading Plato's Republic in philo right now and what you said is a really nice connection! The knowledge of the craft can only be obtained through living it - of course we admire (and sometimes envy) those sports stars, but it's a much more straightforward process towards finding the beauty of your craft when you're actually living in it. The steps toward that beauty become much clearer, as I'm sure the steps towards achieving Federer's killer ace would have become clear to him with the time and kind of effort he put into his work. Of course, that's not to say that just thrusting yourself into something will let you find its beauty... but if someone's eye is open and one's mind active, the best is possible.
