As for NSERC, I&#039;m not sure how it works at other universities, but I can tell you how York does it.   
 
Here at York, you have to find a professor willing to support you for the NSERC, and then together you fill out an application that is evaluated by your university&#039;s science department.  At York, I believe the students are usually selected by GPA. 
 
That being said, I know last year, for example, we actually had too few applicants in biology!  So at least here, there seem to be ample opportunities. </description>
